Can I hear red?<\/p>\n
I can see the red leaves in autumn.<\/p>\n
I can feel the red chill in the wind.<\/p>\n
I hear red as a crisp, fierce roar of fire.<\/p>\n

The burn pile started slowly, timidly,<\/p>\n
licking at the edges of thick wood blocks<\/p>\n
without hurting them, consuming<\/p>\n
slender sticks and slats of wood.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Then the red and yellow flames began a dance<\/p>\n
in the center of the pile. It was a fandango<\/p>\n
of flashing flames for our entertainment.<\/p>\n
We alternated feeding the pile of scrap lumber,<\/p>\n
dodging flames leaping out at us<\/p>\n
unexpectedly, as the wind changed.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Soon there was a low rumbling force of<\/p>\n
red hot coals consuming scraps of wood<\/p>\n
at an increasing pace. The flaming beast<\/p>\n
ravenous now, a giant animal tasting<\/p>\n
raw meat for the first time.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Red flames outnumbered the yellow,<\/p>\n
stretching out even further to whisk each<\/p>\n
piece of wood from our gloved hands.<\/p>\n
The heat became so intense, we could only<\/p>\n
throw wood from a distance, feeling<\/p>\n
the skin burn on our faces.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The red hot fire was a living thing now<\/p>\n
and we were its keepers. It lapped up<\/p>\n
patches of green grass just outside the<\/p>\n
burning ring. Charred embers tumbled out.<\/p>\n
at its height, we had fed it the last scrap.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
We watched in wonder as the fire leapt<\/p>\n
and danced with the wind, raging, smoldering<\/p>\n
and very, very slowly dying from the outside in.<\/p>\n
I heard red that day. I heard it. I saw it. I felt it.<\/p>\n
